Poem for the end of school

What's in a building, isn't it just bricks and mortar?
Nothing special really, just and address
Somewhere to hang your hat and arrange furniture
So, why when it's time to leave do we feel distress?

Maybe a building is more than we realize
Maybe it provides comfort, even solace
It isn't with the structure that the reason lies
But with the people who occupy the space.

Going into the lobby at the desk we get a happy greeting.
Smiling and cheerful we go down the hall to meet Elisa and Ms. Hall
Onto a classroom comforted by knowing those who we are meeting
The same routines, fairs and concerts through the spring from the fall.

When there are issues, there was Sr. Reid to help us through
Truancy, discipline, PTO, committees and budgets to be made
A calm spirit and quiet voice, yet strong as super glue
Next year he moves on to teach in the second grade.

Next year will bring a new Principal, Jane Byrne
Though only with us one year, Principal Hester, made an impression
There were many lessons she helped us to learn
The biggest among them respect for all and good communication.

The new kitchen will have a change of face
As Mary, the head cook remains at RMS
For 20 years, the cafeteria under her ran at a steady pace
It surely will be different without her leadership

The Media center is changing too, we will have a new specialist
It seems everything will have a new look
The changes make up and endlessly long list
Even down to checking out a book!

And if it seems things couldn't get anymore dire
Because our music director, Georgia Goodwin has decided to retire!
It is really hard to imagine how someone could fill her talented shoes
Her absence will surely leave many of us singing the blues!

So, no it isn't just bricks, mortar or even cement
It is humanity and life and people who care
Though we take all that we'll still have sentiment
For the old, as we move onto a new space to share.
